Design Day
I started implementing Design Days when I shifted my focus to large-scale tattooing. As a professional illustrator, I incorporated preliminary sketching and concept work into my process to make sure my client’s final image was exactly what they needed. This approach made its way into my tattoo design process and ever since then I believe it gives my client the best experience possible.
Below you will learn about my Design Days, what it entails, and why I require it for most large-scale tattoos I create. We will be working in tandem to allow for more transparency, less guesswork, increased trust and give you the finished tattoo you always wanted.
Consultation
Large scale tattoos require lots of time, energy, and are financially a big commitment. Consultations allow us to get to know each other better, by making sure that personalities, conceptual ideas, and stylistic choices line up with both the artist and the client’s vision. My consultations are always free and are never rushed. You will get the time and attention needed to feel comfortable moving forward with your tattoo.
Concept Phase
After we have discussed your project at length and before you arrive for your scheduled Design Day appointment, I spend time creating 2-3 unique concepts for us to explore. These vary in subject matter and composition, this allows us more of a foundation to work with when we start drawing on the design.
Freehand Live Drawing
After we have reviewed the concepts for your Design Day and agreed on the design you most want to explore, we move to the freehand drawing phase. I utilize markers to create the rough sketch, layout, and subject matter, all while taking your concerns and comments to heart.
Review and Trace
Once you are completely happy with the drawn on design, we will review everything and take photos. I will utilize transfer paper to trace the design and scan it digitally. This step allows me to make sure all the work we did transfers to the finished stencil when we start tattooing.
Design and Tattoo
Utilizing the transferred design, I will complete the finished tattoo design. I stick closely to the sharpie concept as my client’s feedback throughout the process shouldn’t be compromised and at this point we start the tattooing journey.
